Did my child just really say THAT?

Rainer got a kid's camera for Christmas, one that is a lot more durable if dropped and is a lot easier to use. He also knows how to read and sound out simple words.  For Christmas we got to spend time with both sides of the family.  We started at Craig & Connie's and finished off at Bobbi & Jay's.  As we were leaving Craig & Connie's, this happened.

Rainer had taken his camera to Craig & Connie's so that he could take pictures.  While we were en route to Bobbi's, he said a word. Then he kept on saying it. He said it a few more times before my brain was able to process that my sweet boy had just said that--where did he even learn that word?  I knew he didn't hear it at Craig & Connie's and he certainly didn't hear it from anyone at our house.  I turned to him and very sternly told him that that was not a nice word.  He looked perplexed.  He had been studying his camera.  Still looking confused, he asked, "What word does F, C make?"  Robert suggested that maybe he was trying to sound out 'function', so I took the camera to see what he was looking at.  There was no 'function' on the camera--only 'mode'.  I then looked all over to see what Rainer might have been looking at.  There on the bottom of the camera was FC.  Try sounding it out and see what word you come up with...yep, that was what my sweet 4 year old kept saying over and over again.

I couldn't help but smile as I told him that 'FC' isn't a word.  Robert and I then had a good laugh.  Mason and Amanda had been oblivious to it all--which is good.  There is something disconcerting about hearing that word from anyone, but it is especially, very disconcerting to hear it from an innocent little child. Although, for some reason it was quite funny to make Jeanine say that word when she was little.  We'd ask her what a duck said and that was how she said 'quack'.  Sorry Jeanine =).

  2. I never knew that story about me!

It's a good thing that your other kids were oblivious to Rainer's attempt at reading :)
