There were also all sorts of free activities for the kids--everything from story time, to planting flowers, to face painting, and decorating trivet tiles. There were also characters roaming around that the kids could go and meet. Rainer was very excited to see Clifford and wanted to say hi to him. He was a little unsure about meeting him, but he wanted to give him a hug.
This was the outcome.
In addition to all of the different activities, there were different groups performing all day long. Both Mason and Amanda got to perform. Amanda's Ballet Folklorico group performed two dances. She was excited, but also a little bit nervous.
The video is of the first dance that they did. She was kind of thrown off because the people in charge of the music started playing the wrong song. Some of the other kids started to dance (because they knew it from last year) but Amanda didn't start dancing because she knew it wasn't the dance they were doing this year. So, once they started playing the right song, it took her a little bit to re-focus her head and get in time with the other dancers. We were kind of bummed because she started out in the front and then towards the end of the dance she was in the back where we couldn't see her as well. And then for the second dance, she was in the back the entire time.
She did a really great job and had a lot of fun doing it.
Just before we left, the kids got their free hot dog and we watched the CHP dog demonstration. It started out with the officer (who happens to be a member of our ward) talking about safety and that just like the CHP officers wear helmets to protect themselves, the kids should wear helmets when they ride bikes to protect themselves. He also brought out the mask they wear to protect themselves from chemicals or such in the air. He had one girl come up and he was going to have her wear it, but he asked if she had ever seen Star Wars, which she hadn't. He asked if anyone had ever seen Star Wars and Amanda raised her hand. He asked her who the guy with the black helmet and cape was, she said Darth Vader. He then put the mask on her and asked her to demonstrate how he sounded. She did the iconic Darth Vader breathing and then he had her say, "Luke...I am your father." She played along and everyone had a good laugh. He then talked a little about his partner. The dog that was doing the demonstration has been with him for the last 5 years. He says that he has had to use the dog 70 times to convince people to "get with the program". And in all of those 70 times, the dog has never had to attack anyone--they see the teeth and immediately do what they are being asked. He had another officer put protective padding on his arm and then let the dog at him. The dog thought it was great (they think it is just a game). In fact when the demonstration was over, the dog started whining like, "That's it?! I only get to do this once?" The kids really enjoyed it.
When it was over, we went home to let the kids change out of their clothes and then Grandpa Schemel took us out to Chuck E. Cheese. The kids had a great time. Mason even got the bonus twice on the Tower of Power game (you have to stop the lights as they move up the tower just at the right time to get the bonus). The first time he got the bonus it was 50 tickets and the second time was 34 tickets. He was really excited. Rainer also found a game that he really loved.
He had so much fun playing it that we had to make him stop so that other kids could play it too.
When it was time to go home, the kids cashed in their tickets and we got these wonderful prizes!
The Honor Band also performed at the Book Fair. They put on about a 30 min. concert of different songs that they have been learning. This is Mason's second year in the Honor Band, and we think that this is the best they have ever sounded. They were in tune and everyone was playing at the same speed. Because Mason plays the tuba in Honor Band, you really don't get to see his face. All you can do is look for the tuba and know that Mason is somewhere behind it.
He was a little bummed because they didn't get to play this one song that features the low brass section. He says that the other band members haven't been practicing it at home, so it wasn't up to Mr. Longstreet's standard to perform it. (I just think it is amazing that he can do as well as he does on the tuba considering the only time he plays or practices it is at Honor Band practice once a week for an hour. Thank goodness he doesn't have to lug that from home to school and back again.) But he is excited for the Cherry Festival to come in June because the band will perform at that and then they'll play the one song that features the low brass.
