Crisis + Time = Humor...Right?

Friday was a very interesting day, to say the least.

Amanda and Mason have been going to the skate park quite frequently these last few days of summer. Mason has been trying to get up the big curved ramp, but to no avail (as our previous video will attest). Once Amanda made it down the little ramp OK, her confidence grew and she was willing to try other things. But neither one can make it up the big curved ramp on their own. Mason can do it only if he gets momentum and while riding up it, throws his bike up the rest of the way. He then has to scramble up on his own to where his bike is. While they were at the park on Friday, an older kid helped both of them up the big ramp (with their bikes). My thinking is such, that if a kid can't do it on their own, then they have no business doing that thing--whether that is Rainer at the playground, or Mason and Amanda at the skate park. Well, once they were up there, they had to come down. As you can imagine, it didn't end well. Mason walked away with a scraped knee. Amanda severely chipped her front tooth.

They came home straight away and told me what had happened.

To say that money is tight right now is a gross understatement. As Robert says, money and us aren't on speaking terms right now. When I saw Amanda's tooth, I lost it. It was the straw that broke the camel's back--I couldn't stop crying. Money or no money, there was no way we were going to let the tooth go unfixed. After calling up Robert and getting some reassurance from him, I made an appointment to see the dentist that day.

We got lucky. The chip didn't reach the nerve. But we have to keep an eye on it for the next little while. If the tooth remains sensitive, she may need a root canal. Hopefully, it won't come to that. In a couple of years, once her teeth are done growing, we'll probably have to put a cap on that tooth. But as Robert said, out of all the bones in her body that she could have broken, this one is probably the cheapest one to fix. I'm also grateful because the dental assistant purposefully put in a different code for the payment which took off about $100 from the bill. She must have gone to the same school as the plumber who snaked our line.

The dentist did a really good job with Amanda's tooth. With each day that passes, her tooth is becoming less loose and is hurting less and less. We hope that is a good sign.

At first Amanda didn't want me to take any pictures, but I knew that someday we would look back and laugh at this day. And although I'm not quite ready to laugh at the situation, it isn't as much of a crisis as it was on Friday.

  1. What a great blessing that the dental assistant did that... AND that Amanda's chip didn't get to the nerve!
