Read-a-thon

Back in March, Palm held a read-a-thon. My kids really like doing this activity. The school does the read-a-thon by counting how many points each kid earns from doing the AR tests for that book. Each grade has a goal of how many AR point the kids should be able to earn.

As soon as it started, Amanda read just about every book that she could get her hands on. I don't think I have ever seen her read so much. Her class also held their own in-class competition to earn prizes for different amount of points, in an effort to help each kid reach the overall school goal. She had no problem reaching that goal and she was the first in her class to do it.

Mason didn't read many books, but the books he chose gave a lot of points. One book Brisingr gave him 45 points, needless to say, he reached the goal with just that one book. Even though he had already reached his goal, he still continued to read and earn points.

At the end of the read-a-thon, the school had an assembly to recognize the top readers from each grade. Mason was the top reader for 5th grade and Amanda was the top reader for 2nd grade.
We weren't too surprised to find out about Mason being the top reader--he always has his nose in a book. But even Amanda was surprised to find out that she was the top reader for all of second grade.

Regardless, even if they hadn't received any award, we are grateful that they both love to read and are such great readers.
